EEIU Ukraine Winter Activities
Based on the Council of Young Scientists at the A. O. Kovalevsky Institute
of Biology of Southern Seas, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (IBSS
NASU), from 27-30 November 2006 the III All-Ukrainian school seminar
"Ukrainian science and the ecological safety of the Sea of Azov 'the Black
Sea area' 2006" for young scientists was organized at the IBSS Institute in
Sevastopol, Ukraine. The event[base ']s primarily foci of presentation and
discussion were ecological problems and ecological ethics. The EEIU brochure
by Otto Kinne was offered to the participants.
Doctor Nataliya N. Tereshchenko presented the paper "Main ideas and theses
of eco-ethics", after which the following questions were considered:
- Objective pre-conditions for origin of the new ethics conception:
eco-ethics
- The EEIU as global instrument for forming, popularizing and practicing
the ideas of eco-ethics
- Main tasks and aims of the EEIU
- Structure and functions of the EEIU
- Differences between ecological ethics and traditional ethics
- Basic theses of eco-ethics
- Conception of steady development and eco-ethics
The paper was well received, and active discussion on the above followed its
presentation.
The event conveners report a successful seminar.
Prepared by:
Coordinator of EEIU in Ukraine, EEIU Fellow Dr. Nataliya N. Tereshchenko
Dr. Brian Marcotte Steps Down as Co-Director of the Eco-Ethics International Union and Co-Editor-in-Chief of Ethics in Science and Environmental Politics
Oldendorf/Luhe, Germany, 24 October 2006. Dr. Brian M. Marcotte, Co-Director of the Eco-Ethics International Union (EEIU) and Co-Editor-In-Chief of the e-journal Ethics in Science and Environmental Politics (ESEP), announced last week that he has stepped down from these positions. Dr. Howard I. Browman has been named sole Director, with EEIU activities continuing under his guidance. Dr. Browman also becomes Editor-in-Chief of ESEP.
Dr. Marcotte, who has led the EEIU alongside Dr. Browman since March 2005, will continue to be associated with Union activities as a private individual, with plans to reach out to American youth as an advocate for eco-ethical principles. Dr. Marcotte continues as founder and principal of The Collegium (www.collegium.org), a group of like-minded intellectuals focusing on epistemology and the distribution of educational materials on a wide variety of themes.
In addition to the foundation of the EEIU-USA as a North American affiliate of the EEIU, projects undertaken during Dr. Marcotte's leadership include a Hindi translation of the core eco-ethics materials, an "Eco-Ethics Toolkit" for practitioners in the field (in development), and an essay contest for graduate students in the world[base ']s top universities (in development).
EEIU Director Dr. Browman commended Marcotte's efforts on behalf of the Union. "The EEIU thanks Dr. Marcotte for his extensive efforts and unflagging enthusiasm throughout his tenure with the organization. Under his stewardship, significant contacts for future development have been initiated in the USA and Europe. With the foundation of the EEIU-USA, the Union's philosophy and goals can be taken to Americans. Brian's service as Founder and President of the EEIU-USA will be a lasting benefit for the entire Union. On behalf of the EEIU community, I extend my thanks and appreciation for his outstanding vision and commitment."
EEIU Coordinator Mary Batson commented, "Thanks to Dr. Marcotte, the Union has a solid foundation from which to continue outreach across North America, where we are committed to stepping up the EEIU's important work. Dr. Marcotte's efforts provided a key impetus in bringing the Union across the Atlantic; we wish him all the best in his future endeavors."

"Some wise man said that knowledge has to be put in action; understanding within the mind is useless, if it does not connect to moral obligations. When a man stays alone with Nature, it is only his/her personal knowledge, persuasion and ethical principles which determine his/her decisions and formulate rules of his/her behaviour in relation to Nature. Reasoning about it, the well-known ecologist and philosopher O. Kinne (Kinne, 1997) underlines that man, as a species, is not the centre of the Universe. It is only one species among millions of other species and is a part of the life process [^] exactly as a dolphin, a mouse or a virus. Over millions of years life on Earth has evolved, having been tied up with biological species by the most compact way into balanced ecological systems. Species, even such a one as Homo sapiens, are not able to survive in themselves [per se] separately from ecosystems, parts of which they are and to live in which they have been adapting with thousands of previous generations. We shall be severely punished, if we are not able to establish new equilibrated relations between our modern life and Nature, as O. Kinne considers.
To contribute to the dissemination of ethical principles and persuasions in relation to Nature in the midst of specialists and nature-users, especially among the young generation, Professor Otto Kinne (Germany) and Academician Gennady Grigorievich Polikarpov (Ukraine) founded the Eco-Ethics International Union in 1998 under the device 'Humanity can survive only with a new concept of ethics: eco-ethics'. At present EEIU has hundreds of members in tens of countries of the world and is open for all persons sharing its views and principles. EEIU 2005 Annual Report
Dear Colleagues and Friends,
Welcome to 2006! This new year promises to be an exciting one for the Union, as we expand into new regions and explore cutting edge methods of outreach and advocacy. Viewed from a business standpoint, 2005 was a spectacular year, bringing new leaders and growth in local components around the world. In the field, scientific progress quickened. Awareness soared. Expenses edged up only marginally. Advocacy efforts impacted environmental policy in multiple regions. Borders were crossed in cooperative projects in ways the Union had never before explored.
But the EEIU is not a business. And despite all these successes, we saw another year slip past without achieving a sustainable balance between nature and humanity. Kyoto took effect, but key countries remain non-committal at best. Many of the world's wealthiest countries' environmental policies continue to set index scores as the least sustainable. Natural disasters struck repeatedly, capturing public attention briefly and sparking hope that the tipping point had been reached, but the momentary interest passed as quickly as the media coverage, and little significant progress was made.
To promote the paradigm shift necessary for developing this balance within our societies, we must continue to lead by promoting public awareness and increased dialogue, involvement at all levels, and personal change.
Through volunteers and staff working in more than 80 regions worldwide, the EEIU provides a diverse network for environmentally concerned individuals. We have made steps toward reaching our goals - but there are many more to be taken. Join us as we enter 2006 fully committed to building a new house for humanity.
You are cordially invited to join the Union as a Member. Please support our efforts!

EEIU News: September 2004
Greetings one and all!
Once again, August has shown exciting growth for the Eco-Ethics International Union, thanks to the efforts and endeavors of Union Affiliates around the globe.
In the last month, we welcomed new Members from Denmark, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Kenya and Pakistan. Three new Chapters were founded in Srinagar, India (Chair: Dr. Zafar Shahdad Khan); Lahore, Pakistan (Chair: Mr. Sayyed Hossein Shah); and Multan, Pakistan (Chair: Mr. Ayub Sajid). We anticipate much growth and involvement in these locations; activities have begun and Chapter membership is developing rapidly!

EEIU Refutes Hackers' Emails
To all EEIU Affiliates:
As you may remember, just a few weeks ago we posted a warning notice on the Union list-serv about fake emails and spam that appear to be sent from the Union's various email addresses.
Approximately 2-3 weeks ago, hackers sent a major wave of emails around the world in support of various anti-social elements, including neo-Nazi movements and so on. We became aware of this only accidentally, when some of the messages were refused and bounced back to the real EEIU address. Other German companies' and organisations' addresses were also used as headers for these messages.
These messages were sent using a false heading; they appear to be from the EEIU, but they are not. Given the destructive content of these messages, we felt it necessary to issue an additional statement refuting any such connections on the part of the EEIU.
The EEIU has no affiliations with such organisations or movements. We do not support, in any way, their ideas and philosophies, and renounce any efforts made by such organisations in the name of the EEIU.
Unfortunately, there is little to nothing we can do (technologically) to prevent this from happening — and at this point, there is also little legal recourse.
We simply ask Union members to be aware of this, and if you receive such an email, please let us know, so a disclaimer may be posted on our site. Also, if you know of friends who have received such mails, who might not be on the EEIU list-serv, please let them know that these are false representations and do not in any way represent the Union and the concepts and theses of eco-ethics.
We will continue to research preventative methods and do all we can to block further occurrences and protect the information of Union members.

Eco-Ethics International Union
Annual Report for 2003
Dear Colleagues and Friends,
Welcome to a New Year and new opportunities for the expansion of the Eco-Ethics International Union (EEIU)! The year 2004 promises to be an exciting one, with many projects underway to spread eco-ethics concepts and theses. In the past year, the Union has almost doubled in size, both numerically and structurally. The message of eco-ethics is getting out — and proving ever more welcome as ongoing climate changes create an increasingly receptive audience.
However, we should not let mere numbers distract us from the true mission of this organisation. In order to bring real eco-ethical change to our societies, in 2004 we must continue to lead this charge by promoting public awareness and increased dialogue, top-down and bottom-up involvement, and personal change. Many thanks for your previous and continued efforts; we are happy to share in this challenge with you!

The Union continues to grow by leaps and bounds: membership in 2003 literally doubled. The new online registration form is proving popular — after going 'live' on 22 May, close to half of our registrations have arrived via this channel. Although we cannot note each individual here, a list of Members is available on the EEIU web site.
Welcome one and all, and the best of luck in your endeavours for the EEIU! You are an important building block for the Union, and we appreciate your support and efforts in spreading the concepts and theses of eco-ethics among your contacts.
(4) EEIU New Media Outreach Top
EEIU web pages continue to attract a growing audience: in the last 12 months 'Summary.net' recorded a 25% increase in EEIU visitors. Regular updates ensure that there's always something new to check out on the EEIU pages!
The EEIU listserv EEIULIST was redesigned and relaunched — providing a convenient one-stop source for Members to share information with our global network. New Members are registered automatically, and we will soon offer subscription directly from the home page for non-members who also wish to stay posted on Union activities.
Note: To subscribe to the listserv, send a blank e-mail to: eeiulist-on@int-res.com. To post a message to the list, write to: eeiulist@int-res.com. To unsubscribe, send a blank e-mail to: eeiulist-off@int-res.com.
Brief items of interest:
- EEIU New Links — an index page for website additions was created — simply bookmark our New Links page to see what's new with the EEIU!
- EEIU Online Registration — now available and in use around the globe!
- EEIU Archives — in the interest of reader-friendliness, dated materials can be located here.
- EEIU Chapter pages — have been redesigned with a standard template. Thanks for the feedback — we're glad you like the new look!
- Data protection/privacy policy — Many thanks to all the Fellows, Chairs and Members who responded in our recent data protection project, as we updated our records in accordance with new European Union law.
Special thanks go to Nate Russell, Inter-Research Webmaster, for his assistance on the Union's web pages. Nate's expertise is opening up new avenues for improving our service and pursuing online expansion!
(5) EEIU Fundraising Top
As the Union has grown, our resources unfortunately have not. And, as is typical for not-for-profit organisations — we're beginning to feel the pinch as we endeavour to maintain and increase our services to the rapidly expanding family of Union affiliates.
Accordingly, in 2003 we began exploratory research and training on fundraising possibilities for both a capital campaign to support HQ expansion and the development of an EEIU Foundation, for the purpose of micro-financing EEIU Chapter and Member activities. Work has already begun on an online fundraising strategy, with additional plans to go into action in 2004. Look for your opportunity to make a difference — it's coming soon!
One motivating titbit: EEIU Kenya/Mombasa Chair Okeyo Benards' work has once again been underwritten by the Lighthouse Foundation of Hamburg, Germany. As in 2002, the figure was approximately 50 000 EUR. This is encouraging news for those Chapters seeking international support!
(6) EEIU Brochures Top
The EEIU Brochure was published in three new languages: Chinese, French, Spanish — what an opportunity for additional outreach! In addition, the Russian and English versions were updated, and two proposed translations (Hindi and Farsi) are under consideration.
Many thanks to our translators: Dr. Wuchang Zhang (Chair: EEIU Qingdao) for the Chinese version; Dr. Hubert Ceccaldi (EEIU Member) and Nathalie Tchorek for the French rendition; and Dr. Rodolfo Barreiro (EEIU Member), Caroline Destouesse, and Matthias Seaman (Assistant Editor, Inter-Research) for the Spanish text. Special thanks go to John Austin (Production Editor, Inter-Research) for technical assistance in producing the brochures.
Note: Additional translations are needed and proposals are welcomed. If you are interested in assisting, please contact Coordinator Mary Batson.
(7) EEIU Staff Expansions Top
We were happy to welcome two part-time personnel for Union administrative matters:
- Marianne Hiller, Administrative Assistant, has been working with us since January. She handles new member registrations (no small task!), address changes and brochure shipments, adding 5+ hours to the EEIU work week.
- Kirsten Schween, Administrative Assistant, joined the EEIU team in June. She assists the Coordinator and Marianne on assorted EEIU projects, adding up to 10 hours a week to HQ resources.
Thank you, Marianne and Kirsten, for all your hard work in 2003. As we all know, it is the 'Kleinigkeiten' (small details) that often require the most time and attention!
Special thanks are extended to Helga Witt and the entire Inter-Research staff, for their invaluable assistance and support on Union projects and development.
(8) EEIU Projects: Call for Volunteers Top
2003 saw the birth of many new ideas and projects for the Union. There is much to be done, and we are eager to take up this challenge. BUT: WE NEED YOUR HELP! Our human resources at HQ are extremely limited, and to implement the various project ideas that you have shared, we need additional hands, eyes, and brains.
If you are interested in assisting on EEIU projects (planning, designing, implementing, monitoring and evaluating) and have easy and frequent access to a computer and a regularly checked e-mail account, please contact HQ. As projects related to your interests are considered, the Coordinator will contact you to discuss possible involvement. Thank you for your assistance in this matter!
(9) EEIU Communication Top
One goal in 2003, which shall continue in 2004, was increased communication between all EEIU affiliates. Many thanks to the 19 Chapters who filed reports with HQ over the past months: sharing your expertise, experiences and 'best practices' is key to reaching our objectives!
We encourage Chapters and Members to share information amongst themselves (and of course with us!) via our web pages, the EEIU listserv, and direct contact. This is a much-needed service for newly formed Chapters and new Members, who benefit greatly from the combined expertise.
(10) EEIU Details Top
And not to forget other special goings-on:
- We celebrated five years in March — Happy Birthday, EEIU!
- And — Happy belated birthday to EEIU President Otto Kinne, who turned 80 in August!
- EEIU HQ was happy to welcome Denis Aheto, Chair of EEIU Ghana REDEF (EGR), for two brief visits earlier in the year. EGR was launched officially in November, with three days of activities, seminars and workshops. The highly successful event was attended by various government officials and local Chapter Members. Okeyo Benards, Chair of EEIU Kenya/Mombasa, joined the festivities, acting as representative of President Otto Kinne, who was unable to attend.
- The EEIU Flag was designed and produced! Full-size and desktop flags will be awarded to Local Components who show ongoing and sustained high initiative and activity levels and regularly submit Chapter information and reports to be published on EEIU web pages.
- EEIU Logo and Name — As previously announced, HQ is in the process of registering the EEIU logo and name as international legal trademarks. If you have questions about the use of either, please contact HQ for specifics. "Eco-Ethics International Union" and "EEIU" ONLY are recognised for official use. Use of the EEIU Logo must be previously approved by the EEIU President.
