Chapter in Brief:
Chapter Chair Dr. Lyudmyla Hrytsak, professor and senior scientist in the Ternopil State Pedagogical University ecological department, assists in organising the conference series "Your Native Land" for local schoolboys. The conferences bring together students engaged in research on local environmental problems and provide a valuable networking and knowledge-sharing opportunity. The next scheduled conference is in April 2003.
In the laboratory Dr. Hrytsak works with students on methods of population preservation for the endangered plant species of genus Gentiana and Primula, which grow in the Ukrainian Carpathian mountains. Having studied the conditions of the species' natural populations, the group has developed in-vitro duplication methods which have allowed quick regeneration of the necessary landing material for the renewal of the missing populations and the stabilisation of the number of threatened groups. As of February 2003, Dr. Hrytsak and her students have begun transferring in-vitro plants to their natural homes. However, a need has been revealed for conducting cytogenetical research before transferring the plants to their rightful habitats, as these specimens are raised in environments that contain phytohormones, which can lead to cytogenetic changes in the plants.
Gentiana species are valuable herbs; local citizens gather them for use in medicinal tinctures. Accordingly, renewal and population stabilisation efforts alone are not enough. To this end, Dr. Hrytsak and her colleagues have signed a contract with the Carpathian National Park, allowing the group to grow the plants in the reserve's protected nurseries. It is hoped that agricultural technological developments will enable the local population to grow the herbs privately, thus protecting those plants growing in the wild.
Dr. Hrytsak wishes to obtain seeds for the species Primula farinosea L. subsp. Farinose, which has completely disappeared from the Ukrainian flora. Opportunities to obtain these seeds are limited. If any EEIU Members have knowledge of possible access to seeds from natural populations (collections from botanical gardens cannot be used, due to hybridisation), Dr. Hrytsak has asked to be contacted.
Dr. Hrytsak intends to incorporate the concepts and theses of eco-ethics in her work, both practically and theoretically, as she works to develop EEIU Ternopil. Interested parties may reach her at the above address.
