Reports & Letters, EEIU Tehran

Chapter in Brief:

Recognising a lack of information which has contributed in part to heavy air pollution and a rubbish-filled city, EEIU Tehran intends to focus on environmental education as a primary aim, via television, workshops and person-to-person efforts. Under the direction of Chair Haleh Khodadadi, managing director of the Iran Ecology Association, EEIU Tehran works in conjunction with the recently founded Eco-Center, also managed by Ms. Khodadadi, which serves the approximately 5000 individuals living in the local sector.

Current and future projects of the Chapter and Eco-Center include:

  • Oxygen tent festival (for the health week)
  • Balcony flowers festival (for the development of a vertical landscape)
  • Weekly meetings about balcony flowers
  • Education about composting, home to home (conducted by volunteer youth)
  • Establishment of an Eco-Tour group (to set up a station in the mountains and work on environmental behaviour education)
  • Establishment of a landscape research-application group (to be educated in the Eco-Center approximately 3 months). Those of the group interested in researching will also distribute brochures among the local citizens
  • Research group to be formed by individuals educated in various environmental fields who will focus on urban environmental problems. At the end of the program the group will conduct an assessment on possible solutions for changing citizens' behavior
  • For variety: one-day tour for Eco-Center Members. During the tour, Members conduct workshop training where rubbish is found along the road
  • Establishment of a recycling group that will focus on educating people who live in various areas in which rubbish is found
  • Education of local citizens about environmental partnership techniques
