Report, 21 October 2003 (Chair Firman Sinaga)

Chapter Report, EEIU North Sumatra

We, youths from North Sumatra, have founded EEIU North Sumatra as an independent organization. This organization is planned as a forum for North Sumatra Province, Indonesia. We plan for this organization to have Members or Chapters according to the needs of North Sumatra Province. A leadership structure has been provided to assist in building the organisation.

To implement EEIU concepts and theses, our priority is teaching ecological knowledge to school and university students, village youths, and farmers in integrated programs, teaching them about the sustainability of their ecosystem. Our methodology in founding clubs is to plan our programs continually. We are concerned about how to build a new worldview in society, about how we think about the relationship between the earth and the ecosystem, and how to improve the fact that humanity can survive only with the new concept of eco-ethics.

Hence, EEIU North Sumatra will become an institutional center for training and education, advice and research. Now, we have been providing our first programs to present the Chapter to the community with a seminar and conservation project in the Lake Toba region, North Sumatra. We will also provide our office, so the community can easily access us. This planning will develop into integrated programs on how to share ecological knowledge at all levels. From this planning we want to develop our model from various participation models, to encourage the local initiative to participate in ensuring the sustainability of their ecosystem.

Letter, 04 August 2003

From: Mr. Firman Sinaga, Chair, EEIU Indonesia / North Sumatra, Toba Samosir, Indonesia
To: Mary Batson, EEIU Coordinator, Headquarters, Germany

Dear Ms. Batson,

I would like to update you about EEIU North Sumatra. We are focusing on implementing and translating the eco-ethics theses. We want to focus our work on building participation with the local youths and farmers. To realise these activites, we plan:

1) To build a Youth Club for sustainable development. This club will be designed for the university graduate, to assist farmers in progressing from the traditional system to sustainable agriculture.

2) To make a planning program for our government (Toba Samosir) about our proposals. This is intended to show the need of development of the traditional agricultural system, using a pilot project based on the following objectives and considerations:

a) how farmers can work more innovatively and develop their technology, and how they can recognise the uncertainty of their system, including its future
b) what models will be needed for the traditional system of Toba Samosir
c) how the farmers can respond to redesign their system
d) how the roles of government can be applied to the model, and how the research design can be developed
e) how farmers, the government and other developers can mutually benefit
f) what kinds of research are needed for this program
g) how farmers can benefit from the introduction of agroforestry technology
h) how the above can be continuously improved, and how the youth can work to update the idea of their system
We hope the above objectives will bring Toba Samosir toward Sustainable Development, because for two decades this district has been using primarily unsustainable methods. We are planning to provide our proposal on "Promoting agroforestry technology in the traditional agricultural system of Tapanuly".

I will send you our proposal after we have received government support of the same. About the Chapter I will inform you after I have registered with the government as an independent organisation — this is important if we want to apply for grants or funding, or to develop a program.

Sincerely yours,

Firman Sinaga
