Report, 03 June 2004 (from Chair Adetona Taiwo)

EEIU Nigeria/Mushin Activities

We had our first meeting on Wednesday, 1st June 2004, with 12 members in attendance. Officers were appointed for the positions of Chair, Vice-Chair, Director of legal services, Coordinator - environmental protection programmes, Secretary General, Coordinator - Education and youth group, Public relations officer (PRO), Accountant, and Coordinator - Task force group.

Our mission statement
EEIU Nigeria/Mushin is a non-profit research and educational organisation formed to promote strong communities, healthy local economies, environmental sustainability and eco-ethics and environmental awareness.

We set up 2 committees:

  1. Committee on appointing Advisory council. Headed by the PRO. To forward names of emminent society members, contact them and explain the ideals of EEIU and encourage them to be members of our Advisory council.
  2. Committee on Launching/seminar. Headed by Chair. To plan seminar topics and sources for resources, to put in place seminar venue and seminar presentation gadgets.
In view of the above we decided to hold a seminar on carbohydrate economy and tyre recycling. The resources for the carbohydrate economy includes:
  1. Biochemicals for the automotive industries...$12
  2. Biochemicals for the printing industries...$12
  3. Making construction materials from cellulosic waste...$10
  4. How much energy does it take to make a gallon of soydiesel ...$10
  5. Replacing petrochemicals with biochemicals...$25
  6. Rural development, biorefineries and the carbohydrate economy...$5
  7. The carbohydrate economy, making chemical and industrial materials from plant matter...$25
  8. Alcohol fuels from whey...$10
  9. Lubricants from vegetable oil...$12
(1-9 from carbohydrate economy publications of www.ilsr.org)
  1. How to make $400 from free used tyres .....$29 from www.wgsc.com
  2. Tyre recycling success ....$49 from www.tyrerecyclingsuccess.com
These are about all the resources we will be needing to successfully conduct our launching seminar. The costs total $199, without shipping and handling charges. We will be grateful if we can be helped with this request of ours for a successful launching. The money from this knowledge transfer seminar will be used to do some other future projects.

The Chair delivered a 'Train the Trainers' seminar on eco-ethics for those members present to aquaint them with EEIU. The General Meeting has been fixed to be fortnightly, although executive meetings may be convened at any time depending on urgency.

Report, 28 May 2004 (from Chair Adetona Taiwo)

EEIU Nigeria/Mushin Activities

While awaiting receipt of EEIU brochures, I have begun recruiting members; 7 new members have joined our efforts but I am still canvassing for additional members.

The Chapter will hold its first meeting next Wednesday, 2 June 2004, during which members will deliberate on forming a mission statement, appoint officers and select notable people in the nation to be members of our local Advisory board, patrons and matron. We will also deliberate on our inauguation, for which we hope to hold a seminar on "waste to wealth" for scientists in the federal ministries of environment, the federal environmental protection agency, all 36 states' environmental protection agencies, waste management agency, and 774 local government environmental and health officers. We could make it a paid but not too expensive knowledge transfer seminar on how to turn waste to wealth. We want to search for resources from the Institute for Local Self Reliance in America (www.ilsr.org) on topics such as making lubricants from vegetable oil, creating wealth from everyday items, and so on.

We would be happy if EEIU Headquarters or any other party could help us by ordering these resources on the ILSR website. I wrote them to inquire if they could conduct a seminar here, but the fee is about 3,000 USD. That is why I thought if the Chapter could lay hold on the resources we could hold the seminar ourselves.
