Activities of EEIU Moscow Chapter 2

On October 20, 2006 we held the 8th international conference [OE]Aquatic Ecosystems, Organisms, Innovations-8[base '] (Moscow, location: Moscow State University). Presentations were presented by scientists from several countries, including Estonia, Germany, France, Spain, Malaysia, Moldova, Russia, Ukraine, USA, and others. During the conference the process was finalized for the international ranking towards awarding the honorary title 'Aquatic Ecologist of the Year'. In previous years, among the awardees of the title were Otto Kinne, Robert Wetzel, Gene Likens, Rita Colwell and other prominent figures in aquatic ecology.

The proceedings of the previous conference of the same series were published in the new volume of the series 'Ecological Studies, Hazards, Solutions'.

Three public lectures on Ecology for a broader audience with special attention to university teachers, schoolchildren and the teachers who teach them were held, and two interviews and discussions of environmental problems were organized for broadcast by one of national Radio Programs (People's Radio).

A talk on improving environmental law was given at the meeting of a committee of the Duma (national Parliament). In addition, two new lecture courses were established in one Moscow university, [OE]Ecological problems of environmental pollution[base '] and [OE]Ecological issues of sustainable development[base '].

Chapter members published over 20 scientific publications including the book: Biological Effects of Surfactants (CRC Press, 2006).

We plan new activities for the new year in 2007.

Report, 13 January 2005 (from Chair Prof. Sergei A. Ostroumov)

EEIU Moscow Chapter 2 Activity Report

EEIU Moscow Chapter 2 includes both students and faculty of Moscow State University and additional universities.

The Chapter's annual event run is the international conference (poster session) 'Aquatic Ecosystems and Organisms'. Each year over 50 persons, both mature scientists and students, participate in the conference. Following each conference a volume of proceedings is published. The volumes were published as individual volumes of a new series 'Ecological Studies, Hazards, Solutions', which was established in 1999 by Dr. S. A. Ostroumov, Chapter Chair. The Editorial Board includes scientists from Belgium (Prof. H. Dumont), Germany (Prof. O. Kinne), USA (Prof. S. McCutcheon et al.) and other countries. The Advisory Board includes scientists from 26 countries.

In November 2002 and 2003 an additional conference was organized by students of the faculty of Psychology of Moscow State University.

Annually a contest of term papers on issues of ecology is organized. Students concentrating in Biology, Geography, and Psychology are very active. Several dozens students participate each year.

Awarding the honorary title 'Aquatic Ecologist of Year'

EEIU Moscow Chapter 2 actively participates in the international ranking of aquatic ecologists. The results of the active networking with nominations of candidates are considered at the annual conference 'Aquatic Ecosystems and Organism' and the finalists are announced.

Laureates of the honorary title Aquatic Ecologist of the Year:

Aquatic Ecologists of the Year (2003):

A. F. Alimov (Director, Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences; President, Hydrobiological Society)

D. S. Pavlov (Director, Institute of Ecology and Evolution of the Russian Academy of Sciences; Chair, Department of Moscow State University)

V. D. Fedorov (Chair, Department of Hydrobiology of Moscow State University)

V. D. Romanenko (Director, Institute of Hydrobiology; President, Hydroecological Society of Ukraine)

Otto Kinne, Germany

Gene Likens, USA

Aquatic Ecologists of the Year (2002):

M. E. Vinogradov (Associate Director, Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences)

Henri Dumont, Belgium

The names of awardees were published in several newspapers and magazines.

Nominations for the next award — the honorary title of Aquatic Ecologist of the Year (2004) — are invited. Please send your nominations to saostro@online.ru.

-----

EEIU Moscow Chapter 2, together with the Intl Biospherics Academy, Consortium for Aquatic Ecological Sciences, and Advisory Board of the series of conferences 'Aquatic Ecosystems and Organisms', announces the call for nominations for the honorary titles of

G. E. Hutchinson Scientist Laureate

S. N. Skadovsky Scientist Laureate

It is recommended that the nominees are: scientists over 40 years old who made significant personal contributions to the science of aquatic (freshwater and marine) ecology, and also in education, in serving the international scientific society, in editing scientific publications, and in helping younger scientists and colleagues.

It is expected that the nominated person(s) contributed both to discovery of new facts and to developing new fundamental ideas that help in the conceptualization of the material of aquatic ecology, with importance for general ecology as well.

Awarding the honorary title is the extension of the successful practice of awarding the title of Aquatic Ecologist of the Year.

As widely known, both G. E. Hutchinson and S. N. Skadovsky were outstanding scientists who contributed much to developing aquatic ecology. G. E. Hutchinson authored, among other books, A Treatise on Limnology, v. 1-3, 1957-1975. S. N. Skadovsky authored the monograph Ecological Physiology of Aquatic Organisms, Moscow, 1955. Both professors created schools of scientists who continued their studies.

In our opinion, Professor Robert Wetzel is a good candidate for the honorary title of G. E. Hutchinson Scientist Laureate.

As for S. N. Skadovsky Scientist Laureate, we suggest Professor Alexander F. Alimov, who has authored the books Elements of the theory of functioning of aquatic ecosystems, , Introduction to Hydrobiology of Productivity. In his capacity as President of the Hydrobiological Society and Director of the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (St. Petersburg), Prof. Alimov helped many young scientists.

You are welcome to express your opinion and to nominate persons whom you see as good candidates.

Please send your nominations to saostro@online.ru.

Among those who may correspond with you on the matter of the honorary title are Mrs. Francesca Venice and Mr. Rosa Stein, both at the same email address.

Report, 19 December 2002 (from Chair Dr. Sergei Ostroumov)

EEIU Moscow 2 Reports...

Chair Dr. Sergei Ostroumov reports that 2002 was a busy year for the Moscow Chapter. In June the Chapter organised a conference "Aquatic Ecosystems and Organisms 4", during which Dr. Ostroumov, in his capacity as Chair of the organising committee, took the opportunity to promote the EEIU as a moral sponsor of the conference and an important organisation in the field.

In October over 60 students from Moscow State University attended a presentation on ecology and the EEIU, which the Moscow Chapter organised. One of the students spoke about the EEIU Brochure and visits to the EEIU website. Many of those in attendance wrote papers on ecology and environmental ethics, and two students gave a presentation after reviewing the papers of other students. The students of the Department of Psychology were very active in this presentation.

Plans for 2003 include organising another conference "Aquatic Ecosystems and Organisms 5" and a similar student-focused conference.

Dr. Ostroumov, our most recently appointed EEIU Fellow, had several major personal achievements during the year, including acting as Guest Editor of a special Hydrobiologia issue on the ecology of water purification, and being elected to the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. Additionally, he was invited to join the editorial board of two journals (Hydrobiologia, and Ekologiya).

Excellent work, Dr. Ostroumov and Members of Moscow 2!! You are to be commended for your efforts on behalf of eco-ethics. We look forward to more of the same in 2003!

2000 Report

The Chapter has started to unfold its activities. On March 14, 2000, Dr Ostroumov introduced the EEIU to a meeting of the Department of Hydrobiology, Moscow University. On March 16 he explained the goals and activities of the Union to a meeting of the Scientific Council of the Academy of Science in the field of Hydrobiology. A third step is planned for June 22 in a poster session, "Aquatic Ecosystems and Organisms - 2000", to be held at the Moscow State University. The session will also include an exhibition of pictures and photos of aquatic organisms and landscapes (seascapes). It is planned to place some of the abstracts of the session here on the EEIU website.
