Reports & Letters, EEIU Malaysia / Kajang

Chapter in Brief:

Vision
Initial efforts will be to develop the Malaysian society towards achieving its new vision (Vision 2020) and worldview, besides bringing onboard its citizens to contemplate the relationship between nature and human, as well as sustaining an effective equilibrate relation.

Mission
1. The need to inculcate self-consciousness amongst the Malaysia society in identifying environmental ecological issues. By embarking on a critical academic examination of the relevant issues, a scientific community can be created which will not only contribute towards addressing environmental ecological issues, but also secure a harmonious and sustainable quality of living environment.

2. To disseminate and inculcate confidence in the population at large of the importance of the concept: eco-ethics for sustainable development. To fulfill this vision and mission, we have identified our target group, the prospective young scientists who can better appreciate and identify with their living environment. We will work towards this target by establishing associations and learning clubs based on ecological knowledge (eco-clubs) in all parts of Malaysia, both at the school level and/or at the tertiary institutional level. This is important in view of the recent emphasis on the role of adults in monitoring and guiding their children to ensure a livable place and living environment in the future.

Underlying the above aspirations and importance, EEIU Malaysia/Kajang is an organization that offers a forum to its members (individuals or groups/institutions alike) for addressing environmental ecological issues. We hope to accomplish this task in two years, to reflect the wider representation of the Chapter's activities in other regions in Malaysia. Besides that, the organization is not confined only to the organizational setup per se, but also to fulfilling members' needs in gaining a wider understanding of eco-ethics concepts. Thus this organization offers opportunities to members to deliberate on environmental ecological issues addressing the fundamental question: Why do we need new ethics: eco-ethics?

Areas of Emphasis
EEIU Malaysia/Kajang will serve as an institutional center for training and education, advisory and research activities. Our offices are accessible to the community. From this planning we would like to develop an indigenous model of participation to encourage local initiative in ensuring the sustainability of their ecosystems.

EEIU Malaysia/Kajang provides a unique framework for assisting local communities in moving towards sustainable development, environmental protection and cultural integration and unity. EEIU Malaysia/Kajang can be used to help define shared values and goals, and evaluate progress towards sustainability.

To provide education and training for local leaders and communities regarding the fundamental principles of sustainable development, and how to incorporate these principles into decision-making processes. Toward this end, EEIU Malaysia/Kajang will be integrated into professional training and community development programs as a guiding framework for implementing sustainable development.

Organize lessons and explain eco-ethics principles to primary and secondary school students. To create a network on ecological education for children and youth, while simultaneously enticing them to ecological work. EEIU Malaysia/Kajang will initially focus on the academic sphere both at the university and high school level, so as to establish a Youth Group that will teach young people about the environment. Involving students from educational organizations in educational activities, in accordance to the spirit of EEIU's framework.

EEIU Malaysia/Kajang would like to engage through participatory processes so as to make a positive impact on the individual as well as the community level.

Promote the formation of Youth Clubs for sustainable development. This club will be designed for the university graduate to assist farmers in transforming from the traditional system to sustainable agriculture.

Ensure that EEIU Malaysia/Kajang youth play an active role in promoting the values and principles of eco-ethics. Work with organizations, networks and individuals to share eco-ethics as a tool for racial integration and unity.
