Chapter in Brief:
We as EEIU members held a meeting at Kenyatta University on 7/5/2004 and decided to form a chapter that covers the Northern and Western parts of the country. These parts have always negatively affected the human race due to the several environmental problems experienced there. Our main aim is to provide a better environment for human survival.
The following problems lead to the formation of the Chapter:
Northern Kenya
- Water shortage resulting from the dry climatic region
- Massive soil erosion resulting from wind and animal erosion
- Cattle disease outbreaks leading to loss of stock (the only source of livelihood)
- Poor living conditions and food insecurity resulting from unreliable livelihood
- Poor utilization of natural resources, e.g. solar energy, land, etc., due to lack of know-how
- Poor food insecurity due to inadequate resources, means and low purchasing power
- Unreliable income due to lack of income-generating activities
- Poor vegetation in the region
- High poverty level
- Low level of girl child education
Western Kenya
- Floods during rainy seasons
- Waterlogged region due to swamps
- Poor utilization of agricultural land
- Deforestation
- Drug abuse and abortion
Due to these problems the following objectives were arrived at:
- Providing water to marginalized and pastoral communities
- Reclaiming wasteland for agricultural uses
- Carrying out a forestation program in unvegetated areas to control soil erosion, act as water catchment areas and increase vegetation
- Carrying out intervention in areas experiencing soil erosion
- Advocating for alternative energy sources to firewood, e.g. use of solar energy
- Conducting awareness on natural resource utility and conservation
- Encouraging the use of organic manure to reduce environmental pollution
- Encouraging people to engage and take an alternative livelihood to cattle keeping
- Researching and solution finding for settlement within the waterlogged and arid areas
- Advocating against drug abuse, abortion and equal educational rights for both boys and girls
- Producing a publication on project activities
