EEIU Brochure — Kiswahili translation

The idea to have the EEIU brochure translated to Kiswahili language has been found to be paramount by EEIU Kenya/Mombasa. Kiswahili is the main language in the East and Central Africa region. In Kenya, where this work has been done, the local chapter endeavors to reach as many people as possible, and specifically the young and the youthful generations. The majority cannot understand English but even if they cannot read and write they can easily understand Kiswahili.

To qualify the purpose of this union the local chapter recognized the need to be able to first of all communicate to the target people. Thus, the idea to translate the original Prof. Otto Kinne text. The success of any environmental management activity will only depend on how the local community and other stakeholders can understand the approaches being used and appreciate the activities of the intervening organizations.

EEIU Kenya/Mombasa has focused on its harvest for this noble task at the local national, and regional level and have found the translation of the concepts and theses of EEIU as a paramount task. We are one world and we are living in a global village.

This daunting task could not have been realized without the assistance and co-operation of many of our members. Charles Lugo, EEIU Kenya/Mombasa's social anthropologist, spent most of January 2002 looking for the right words and is indebted for coming up with the first uncorrected Kiswahili version. Mr. Wafula, a lecturer of Kiswahili at Egerton University's languages department gave it a final professional outlook and correction. For all the other times, Okeyo Benards (EEIU Kenya/Mombasa Chair) gave all the moral and financial support to ensure that the work was completed as quickly as possible. We appreciate immensely the financial support from Lighthouse Foundation, Hamburg, Germany who remain as our main sponsors. We are also grateful to Miss Pili Caroline Baya, EEIU Kenya/Mombasa office operations manager for the final editing of this work. Last but not least the efforts of all our office neighbors who always gave us more than five Kiswahili words for every single English word that we sort its translation.

Financial support for the EEIU Kenya (Mombasa/Sare) Chapter
Back to the top

In a contract signed October 2001 in Hamburg, the Lighthouse Foundation (Hamburg, Germany) and the EEIU Kenya Chapter (Mombasa/Sare, Kenya) agreed that the Lighthouse Foundation (LF) supports the Kenya Chapter financially. The LF provides Euro 51.130,00 in support of the project:

"Examination of the fishing traditions, taboos and culture used by local fishermen in the exploitation of the coastal areas."

As pointed out in a letter by the EEIU President (below) this support will greatly help to get the Kenya/Mombasa/Sare Chapter started and to spread the word.
