Report, 19 October 2004 (from Chair Prof. Roberto Danovaro)

EEIU Italy Chapter Ancona 1

The Italian Ancona 1 Chapter of the Eco-Ethics International Union (EEIU) is progressing well. Since its foundation, the Chapter has focused on the need of disseminating the scientific approach to the ethical management of the environment. The Polytechnic University of Marche demonstrated a high sensititvity not only to the development of courses on ecological problems, but also on the need to introduce a new course on Environmental Ethics, based on the approach of the EEIU.

The course is customary for students of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences. Students (ca 40-50 per year) are requested to develop topics in which scientific, legal and ethical aspects are integrated and thoroughly discussed.

The preparation of a book on Environmental Ethics (in Italian) is under way and has already found a publisher.

We noticed that another Chapter was born in Ancona. No interactions have occurred yet between the two Chapters. Possibly in the future it would be better to ask applicants (at least those from the same town) to join together. This could improve the efficiency of the initiatives of each Chapter.

Letter, 25 June 2003

From: Prof. Roberto Danovaro, Chair EEIU Ancona I, Ancona, Italy
To: Mary Batson, EEIU Coordinator, Headquarters, Germany

Dear Mary,

I know rather well Antonello Sala. We will certainly have opportunities to collaborate in joint efforts.

Here in Ancona we worked quite hard; we have activated a course on environmental ethics as a fundamental requirement for a University Degree in Environmental Sciences. The objectives of the EEIU are part of the course and are discussed. Other initiatives are in due course: a special session on Eco-Ethics will be hosted at the XIII National Congress on the Italian Society of Ecology, which will be held at Como (Italy) on 8-10 September 2003 (http://www.congresso.societaitalianaecologia.org).

I participated in a symposium organized by the Ministry for Agriculture on the ecological risks of OGM. A a member of the Council for Genetic Rights, I subscribed the call for attention to the use of OGM in Italian agriculture. Therefore quite a few good news, but still much work has to be done.

Thank you very much again for your contact, I look forward to hearing from you again soon.

With warmest regard,

Roberto Danovaro

Letter, 29 June 2000

From: Prof. Roberto Danovaro, Chair EEIU Ancona I, Ancona, Italy
To: Prof. Otto Kinne, EEIU President, Headquarters, Germany

Dear Prof. Otto Kinne,

Please find a brief description of what we intend to do to be included in our Chapter pages:

Prof. Roberto Danovaro, University of Bari and University of Ancona, Prof. in Applied Ecology, Environmental Impact Assessment and Marine Biology

Main goals:

  1. Investigate possible interactions of biotechnologies viz biodiversity with special reference to marine ecosystems
  2. Estimate the impact of GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) on natural microbial communities with special reference to marine systems
  3. Investigate anthropic impacts on global macro-ecosystem changes
  4. Introduce and teach eco-ethics in the form of lessons and practical activities at our University and include eco-ethics into our programme on bioethics (now customary in Biology courses in Italy)
  5. Organize seminars and conferences at national and/or international level on eco-ethics, with special reference to marine ecosystems
  6. Organize lessons and explain eco-ethics principles to secondary schools

I hope this might be sufficient, but we are open to any suggestion and/or implementation.

With best regards,

Roberto Danovaro
