Reports & Letters, EEIU Ancona I

Chapter in Brief:

EEIU Ancona organised a Congress on the Evolution of Biological thinking for teachers of the secondary schools in which Chair Prof. Danovaro presented a communication on eco-ethics. The article (in Italian) was published in a book sponsored by the National Association of Science Teachers. Prof. Danovaro also wrote an article on eco-ethics on the Bulletin of the Italian Society of Ecology (http://www.dsa.unipr.it/site/documenti/Lett5_2001.pdf). Within the frame of the Italian Society of Ecology Prof. Danovaro proposed the creation of a network of scientists that would monitor social and research issues related to eco-ethics and a document was prepared to stimulate the Italian government towards an eco-ethical management policy.

The initiative planned for the future is a national Symposium on: "Eco-Ethics, Bio-Ethics and Anthropo-Ethics: future perspectives" in which several scientists will compare approaches and priority issues in different fields. This activity, which will be held in Ancona, will be supported by two national associations of Teachers for secondary schools and will see the direct participation of the teachers.

Main goals:

1) Investigate possible interactions of biotechnologies viz biodiversity with special reference to marine ecosystems

2) Estimate the impact of GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) on natural microbial communities with special reference to marine systems

3) Investigate anthropic impacts on global macro-ecosystem changes

4) Introduce and teach eco-ethics in the form of lessons and practical activities at our University and include eco-ethics into our programme on bioethics (now customary in biology courses in Italy)

5) Organize seminars and conferences at national and/or international level on eco-ethics, with special reference to marine ecosystems

6) Organize lessons and explain eco-ethics principles to secondary schools
