Report, 22 October 2004 (from Zainal Arifin, Chair)

EEIU Jakarta Progress Report: January — October 2004

  1. Previous Activities

    1. Exhibition
EEIU Jakarta Chapter, in cooperation with the Indonesian Society for Oceanology (ISO), joined an exhibition for the event 41th Dies Natalis IPB, at Bogor City, on 11-13 September 2004. Funding support was provided by ISO, while EEIU Jakarta's members were responsible for organizing the exhibition, which attracted about 179 visitors.
    2. Workshop Participation
EEIU Jakarta participated in a bilateral workshop on Coastal Resources Exploitation and Conservation: Indo-German Experiences conducted in Bali on 13-15 October 2004. Although the meeting mainly focused on research programs between Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (DAAD) Jakarta and German Alumni, we benefited from building communication among the alumni and the chair of DAAD Jakarta (Ms. Ilona Krüger Rechmann). We hope that we can build a partnership activity in the future.

  2. On-going Activities

    1. Monthly Seminar
Current issues about the environment and ethics are discussed in informal seminars by invited key persons. The informal seminar is regularly held the third week of each month.
    2. Teaching Graduate Students
I am involved in teaching graduate level courses at Bogor Agriculture University. Several articles of Prof. John Cairns were used as additional reading materials in the topic of coastal zone management. Thank you to Prof. Cairns for allowing us to use the materials free of charge.
  3. Youth Activities

We have about 12 members; mostly high school students and a few undergrad students. During school holidays in August 2004, they organized sport events in local communities. The next social event will be on 25 October 2004, when they will invite an orphan gathering.

  4. Others

Open communication between EEIU Chapters has not been seriously established, although we have good personal relations between EEIU Yogyakarta (Mr. Boy Sidharta), Aceh (Mr. Agus Halim) and Medan. We may start to think about some form of communication such as a newsletter for the EEIU Indonesia Chapters using the Indonesian language in order to reach more youth groups (this is just an idea).

The main challenge for EEIU Jakarta is finding funding sources and tapping the spirit of volunteerism. Because of the workload that we have among secretariat members, our programs did not go well in the last two years. Most of our members are researchers (i.e., Ms. Pradina Purwati, Ms. Ari, Ms. Tuti) and Mr. Jafar E, who is currently completing graduate studies.

Report, 18 December 2003
EEIU Jakarta Reports

Chair Dr. Zainal Arifin reports continuing interest in eco-ethical activities in his area, as evidenced by reactions to a recent display at the Indonesian Society for Oceanography. Many questions were raised and leaflets distributed about the EEIU.

On a personal level, Dr. Arifin notes the use of ESEP materials, particularly ESEP Books 1 and 2 (http://www.esep.de/journals/esep/esepbooks.html, available free of charge for downloading) by Prof. John Cairns, Jr., which have proven especially useful as part of classroom discussion for graduate classes.

Environment Day, 2002

The main events of Environment Day, which was held on June 13, 2002, were seminars on the water quality of coastal areas and the showing of documentary films. We invited high school students and civil servants. See photos below:

Dear Prof. Otto Kinne,

I visited the EEIU web site and read the Concepts and Theses of the EEIU.

My colleagues and I decided to set up an EEIU Jakarta Chapter. The Chapter program will include:

1) Translation of the EEIU Brochure into Indonesian language.

2) Promotion of the EEIU through monthly seminar activities in association with the Research Center for Oceanography where I am responsible for this event.

Thank you very much for your attention.

Sincerely,

Zainal
