Update, 7 March 2005 (Chair Emmanuel Roberts)

EEIU Freetown Activities

EEIU Freetown has been engaged in identification of our target groups and sensitization of disadvantaged communities in the East Region (Kailahun and Kenema District) of Sierra Leone.

We are about to finalize our strategic action plan for mass sensitization of youth groups, educational institutions and women's empowerment organisations.

It has been difficult to recruit volunteers and mobilize resources at the local level to set up our secretariat. However, we have managed to acquire two used Pentium computers and a desk to be located in an office space in the National Stadium that is presently under negotiation.

Some members have pledged to contribute money that can be used to establish a Bank Account for EEIU Freetown. It has been difficult to task members due to the fact that all services rendered are voluntary and some member are unemployed.

Moreover, we have identified the need for institutional capacity building to enable us to engage in awareness raising and training of target beneficiaries in June 2005. A detailed action plan will be made available to EEIU Headquarters in Germany by the end of March 2005.

We would appreciate your support to mobilize resources (used computers, printers, photo copiers, stationery, and some seed money to afford training materials and a 2KVA generator) for effective documentation and training of target beneficiaries.

Furthermore, we request a Certificate of Accreditation or a Memorandum of Understanding from EEIU Headquarters in Germany to enable us to establish linkages with other organisations and mobilize resources.

Your suggestions, criticism and recommendations will be of great value to the members of EEIU Freetown.

Letter, 10 June 2004

From: Emmanuel Roberts, Chair, EEIU Freetown
To: Mary Batson, Coordinator, EEIU Headquarters
Subject: Feedback from EEIU Freetown

Dear Mary Batson,

On behalf of the members of EEIU Freetown, I want to express our sincere thanks and appreciation for my appointment as Chair of the Chapter. This is a very big opportunity given to us to mobilize communities and young people within and outside Sierra Leone to promote campaigns on environmental protection and conservation.

On behalf of the members of EEIU Freetown, I want to assure the entire management of EEIU Headquarters that we are fully prepared and willing to uphold the aims and objectives of EEIU Headquarters in Germany and across the world. We have received and downloaded all attachments in relation to formation and coordination of an EEIU local chapter; thanks for your wonderful support.

We have informed and invited all members of EEIU Freetown to a meeting to discuss issues in relation to member recruitment and to develop a strategic action plan to facilitate the implementation of programmes and the establishment of a coordinating centre. In the coming weeks, members will be involved in designing programmes that will be implemented at the local level, as well as identifying stakeholders and environmental agencies with similar areas of operation to avoid duplication of effort. Detailed information on the proposed activities will be forwarded to EEIU Headquarters for further discussion and technical support.

At the moment, we look forward to your moral and technical support in helping us establish a dynamic Charpter. We look forward to working in partnership with you and EEIU Headquarters in Germany.

Best regards,

Emmanuel J. Roberts
Chairman EEIU Freetown, Sierra Leone

Response, 15 June 2004

Dear Mr. Roberts,

Many thanks for your email of the 10th. Glad to hear that all is up and running well with the new Chapter!

Yes, this is a big opportunity — and with your great circles of influence, due to your additional activities as noted in your submitted materials, you hold the possibility to reach many. This offers both opportunity and — in an ethical sense — responsibility. You are to be commended for taking this responsibility so seriously.

I am eager to hear about the results of your upcoming meeting and the development of your strategic plan — how exciting! Your plans on stakeholder identification and other efforts to avoid duplication of effort sound promising. With such a key and time-pressing issue as eco-ethics, it is imperative that we ensure our efforts are as effective as possible. Taking the time to do so at the outset is a great start!

Looking forward to working with you and the members of EEIU Freetown on behalf of eco-ethics,

Best regards,

Mary Batson
