Ethiopia Chapter, Report #1, August 17, 2010
Introduction
The eco-ethics international union, Ethiopia chapter was set by Mr. Tamrat Seyoum and colleagues last December with vision of; working on different programs to make known the principles of eco-ethics. And developing projects on the same agenda so that people will understand it and join the initiatives.
- Introductory program
EEIU-Ethiopia chapter made know itself for various governmental offices, local non governmental organization, embassies; in this regard we met the federal environmental protection Agency officials and briefed them on our initiatives and future plans in the country. We were also made a presentation on our eco-ethics work for AU Bio-safety focal point and made working partnerships. In introductory visit to the Germany Embassy in Ethiopia development section we briefed our agenda and future cooperation, the discussion was so encouraging and we got also a couple of contact through this office .
- Training programs
The Eco-ethics concept was explained and discussed thoroughly during the training workshop conducted by a sub-city environmental sector on an alternative energy for 50 participants
- Formation of youth environmental clubs and visit to environmentally protected areas.
In collaboration with schools we organized a meeting and visit of youth to cleaned and protected areas. The purpose of this program was to initiate the youth on ethical life style regarding the environment.
- Research case study
We set a research and study team with post graduate students on environmental studies from Addis Ababa University. Our fist research theme is 'public environmental attitudes in Addis Ababa' the general objective of this research is to:-
- Measuring and investigating the public environmental attitude through a research sampling in tertiary and selected community members in Addis Ababa ,
- The Concept of Environmental Attitudes: Environmental attitudes are related to environmental problems. Environmental values, the relationship between the environment and society, and perceptions of natural source consumption directly affect overall environmental balance with - the following dimensions of
- environmental view [basic and general environmental values],
- environmental concern [ any environmental problems and the relationship b/n individuals action , Environmental commitment.[ about commitment issues for better environmental quality ,e.g. becoming an environmental activists
At the end of the research [October 2010] a launching program will be organized at African Union hall, and the outcome of this research will be presented. It is planned that the participants of this program will be:-
- Universities
- Related ministry offices [Ministry of Agriculture and urban development, Ministry of education, Ministry of capacity building and others]
- Policy makers
- International and national environmental oriented organizations
- World bank in Ethiopia
- And many others.
