'Eco-Ethics: Responsibility and Roles to Play'

The seminar 'Eco-Ethics: Responsibilities and Roles to Play' was organized by EEIU Bangladesh/Dhaka on 12th April 2004, Prof. Sultan Muhammad Razzak, Chair of the local Chapter, residing. In attendance were representatives of community-based NGOs and students of Dhaka University. Seminar aims were to consider the concept of eco-ethics in relation to Bangladeshi culture and beliefs and the responsibilities and roles to play in this regard.

Agenda items included:

  • Briefing about organization based on EEIU web materials
  • Discussion of responsibilities and roles today
  • Resolutions based on discussion
Prof. Razzak revealed a broad view of eco-ethics, mentioning that they could be used as a revolutionary step in bringing harmony between development and the environment. He underlined the importance of eco-ethics in terms of Bangladesh, which is plagued by poverty, bad governance, loose administration and black money, and urged the need for greater participation and discussion to harvest the benefits of eco-ethics.

Mr. Shahjahan Ali, University of Dhaka student, said that eco-ethics as a broad concept could be a process for the balanced development of third word countries, like Bangladesh, which are facing acute problems in economic development and environmental degradation. He pointed out the lack of coherence in the local economical and political activities. It is apparent that the development projects being undertaken do not consider their impacts on the ecological system and human health. Vast works are needed in the field of the eco-ethics to develop a balanced relation between man (especially human activities) and the ecosystem.

Rabius Shams, University of Dhaka student, regarded eco-ethics as an important process in the balanced development of third world countries and urged developed countries to make policies considering the eco-system. Similarly, participant Mr. Arifuzzaman focused on the importance of eco-ethics for the sustainable development of the country.

Mr. Mizanur Rahman, International Relations student at the University of Dhaka, discussed different aspects of religion and philosophy related to eco-ethics. We as human beings are responsible for the betterment of the environment for the development of human beings and all species on Earth.

Among the participants from different organizations were Fahima Begum Sumi, Syed Monjur Hasan Manun and Hasib. Hasib, an MBA student, pointed out that the environment will cause a painful future for this generation, and emphasized greater participation as necessary to implement this concept.
