EEIU Alushta Reports & Letters
Report, 21 October 2004 From: Dr. Andrey Parshintsev, Chair, EEIU Alushta The Alushta Chapter is continuing to work successfully. This year we planted trees with school children in the Dendropark Reserve of Alushta Town and thereafter every child will care for the tree he or she planted. At present we are selecting eco-leaders from among the school children that took part in the "Plant Your Tree!" campaign, and these eco-leaders will encourage other children to join in their efforts.
Report, June 2002 From: Dr. Andrey Parshintsev, Chair, EEIU Alushta The childrens group 'Eco-Club' has been an active part of the Alushta Chapter of EEIU for several years (since 1998). Children come to us after graduating at least the third grade of school. Closeness to the sea and to mountain forests, near to Alushta Town create a favourable base for working with children. It is necessary to note, it was not always this way. In the past, children would graduate from schools and leave this healthy area to go the rest of the USSR. Now jobs appear also at home, after closing frontiers and developing private business. Step-by-step an understanding is coming to Alushta Town citizens that their main income is directly dependent on the state of the environment: the clean sea, healthy forests, clean town air with low levels of automobile exhausts. Namely it can attract holiday-makers as the main source of the town's income. The children hear these ideas from adults and they begin to relate to the environment in a personal way. The tendency to increase childrens' interests in the sphere of biodiversity protection is especially noticeable after my ten years' experience in training schoolchildren to participate in the Small Academy of Sciences (SAS). During recent times, our young pupils achieved remarkable successes in the work of SAS of Crimea 'Searcher'. In 2000, Elena Sviridenko, a member of the 'Eco-Club' and pupil of 11th grade at School No. 1 won First Place in biology in the Crimea at the yearly SAS session. In 2001, Fedor Gavrilyuk, a schoolboy of the 11th grade of Alushta School No 2 won First Place in biology (SAS session) in Crimea and also at the national level. Now one full member and three candidates to become a full member of SAS work in the EEIU Group. The Eco-Ethics International Union Youth Group is the primary catalyst in the realization of a nature-protecting people of different measures in Alushta. In the framework of the international movement to protect reserves and national parks, 'March of Parks', EEIU members took part in cleaning the Alushta Dendrozoopark of garbage and in the Town's Children's Drawing competition, "The Crimea Nature". The recent action is the assistance in surveying of local populations according to a request by the charitable fund "Saving of rare plants and animals". The aim of the survey (filling out forms) is a work in preparation for the Fifth International Conference on the level of Ministries of protection of environment in the framework of the process "Environment for Europe" (Project 'Kiev-2003'). Unfortunately, we have not the means for acquisition of a computer(s), without which the children of the new century do not conceive of their existence. These are new knowledge and communication with the whole world via Internet and email. However we are looking forward into their future with optimism, remembering that 'the world is not without kind people', on the off-chance that somebody will help! But most importantly, we have shifted over a ridge of non-understanding and indifference re: the problem of biodiversity protection. More and more inhabitants of Alushta are step-by-step coming to understanding that they will have no future without steady development, and without uniting with nature.
